Last Field Trip for the 2015/2016 School Year

After last week, I was really thankful to be coming back to NY to this trip.  The girls were super excited, and it was nice to have a day out.  It was a beautiful day, a little chilly, but the sun was out all day.  It made it nice for all the moms and sitters that were "wearing" kids...neither got too warm!  I have to say that right off the bat, I have a huge amount of respect for the Utica Zoo.  When I set this trip up and got the paperwork for it, the paperwork was the same paperwork that the school would get.  It informed us that adults and students got in for the same price, $3.00 a piece, and teacher got in for free.  I fully planned on paying $9.00 to get in.  When I got to the window to pay, I only paid $6.00!  I was truly touched that Utica Zoo saw each one of us Mom's as a teacher.  It wasn't just me that got in for free, it was each of the moms that showed up there that day.  They had 450 people from the homeschool groups in the surrounding areas.  I can't thank them enough for what they did.  They will never know what that meant to us.  Ok, enough of the sappy stuff...onto the animals!

We ran into a bunch of people while we were there from our group, but we stuck with Hillary and her kids and Beth and her kiddos.

These guys were probably my favorite part of the zoo.  They are soo cool!

"Our" lions...(feel free to steal away Beth)

I just got done saying that I thought it was odd there were 2 males and a female in together when the one male got up, walked over to the other male, rubbed on him...

...and plopped himself down for a good cuddle!  LOL  The only thing I could figure is that they are siblings!

Last but not least :)

This is Beth's extra kiddo...I spent most of the day cracking up at her!  She is so cute and sweet.  She kept stopping at every tree and asking if I could take her picture.  She is only 2!

My warmth for the day :)

We didn't hang out at the Emu's very long...they were so stinky!

I got super excited when the girls said there was a kangaroo over there.  A little size difference, but still cute all the same!

They have pigs right down the road, but they all loved these little guys!

You had to look hard to tell, but he/she is alive!

I think I said this last time we were at the Utica Zoo, but I can't get over the hair on the top of the camel's head.  He looks like he has a hair piece.  It even blew in the wind and came up off his head!  He/she does have different hair than the other camel so maybe he actually does have a hair piece!

We will definitely be back again.  It's such a nice zoo!

Maine...

Thursday morning, around 9, we left for Maine.  We made it about 2 hours into our trip when we stopped and I went into the camper to grab all the dog's leashes.  We not only had our two dogs with us, but we also had Doug's parents two and Kenny and Laurie's dog.  I figured by the next stop they were going to need a leg stretching and a potty break so I figured I should be prepared.  When I got into the camper, I realized there was water all over the floor.  I pulled a couple towels out and tried to find where it was coming from.  I finally narrowed it down to somewhere under the bottom bunk and near the water storage tank.  Doug mentioned that he had seen a couple drops from under there, but hadn't though much of it.  Come to find out, it was leaking from the drain valve on the tank itself.  We decided the best thing to do would be to drain the tank and go dry the rest of the week.  I had 5 gallons of water in the camper and we could use that to flush and brush our teeth throughout the week.  So we pulled the plug.  I stuffed a towel under the valve to catch any more water that would seep out, and we stopped and picked up some JB weld to fix it once it dried.  The rest of the trip was pretty uneventful.  That stop put us an hour behind, but we still made decent time seeing as we were hauling a trailer.
I thought I had dealt with the death of Uncle Steve, but showing up at his place set the emotions right back in place.  It was tough to be at his house, "hear him", "see him", watch his wife and son struggling.  My heart was/is broken, especially for them.  Uncle Steve was such an amazing man, a man that gave his all in everything he did.  As we waited for other family members to show up, we helped Aunt Marcia deal the best that we could.  Overwhelmed is an understatement for how she feels.
The girls met a new friend while we were there...another homeschooler!  She is twelve, and they have agreed to be pen pals.  Marissa and Madalyn are super excited to be writing back and forth with her.
Saturday came, the day of the service, and we all headed for the church.  We were still waiting on Uncle Steve's cousin Dave, and his best friend Alex and his wife Jeanette.  Dave showed up in a pair of shorts, a t-shirt, and sandals.  He apologized for his attire and explained that he shouldn't even be there.  Can I just say God is good?  His story went something like this.
Dave lives in the state of Washington.  When he boarded the plane, he planned on carrying on his luggage.  The first couple people in front of him in line were able to carry their luggage on.  When it got to him, they said the plane was full and he needed to check his bag.  Obviously wasn't his plane but he didn't have a choice at that point in time.  When he arrived in Washington DC for his 2nd flight, his baggage was no where to be found.  He proceeded to his next plane where he was informed that his flight was canceled....not delayed, no gate change...canceled.  The man that he road with on the 1st flight came up to him and said that there was room in his car for him.  They were heading to Maine and would be willing to drive him to the church.  He left the address for the hotel he was staying at so his luggage could be delivered there, and headed out.  He arrived at the church about 10 minutes before the service started.  God cares about the little details.  :)  AMAZING!!!
The service was beautiful.  It was filled with memories, an amazing slideshow that his son Jeff put together, love...over 450 people showed up that day to remember Uncle Steve.  If that doesn't say something about how many lives that man touched in his lifetime, I don't know what will.
We headed back to the house and enjoyed an open hearth fire, roasting marshmallows and enjoying time together as a family.  I'm thankful for the time we had.  We got to meet and spend time with Aunt Marcia's brother, his wife and son, and I feel like we gained a couple more family members.
Sunday morning, around 10:30, we headed for home.  It was hard leaving, but I was thankful that Aunt Marcia's brother Todd was staying on for another day.  This would give them some time alone.  The support system that God has given her is amazing and I'm so thankful that she isn't doing this alone.
The trip home was uneventful and beautiful.  We traveled together with Doug's parents and sister for the majority of the trip.  Kenny and Laurie passed us and headed for home on one of our potty stops for the girls.  About an hour past Speculator, the light on the pilot came on for gas.  Anyone that pulls a trailer knows that that light isn't something you want to see when you are in the middle of nowhere, hauling a bunch of weight.  You suck through gas a lot faster this way!  I hit the fuel button on the GPS and searched for the nearest gas station.  I think the nearest station was about 18 miles away, and the car was saying we only had 12 miles left on our tank of gas.  Math wise that leaves us 6 miles short.  Without saying a word to each other, we punched it in as a new destination and we both started praying.  As we made our first left hand turn off of the main road, both our hearts sunk...the road went to just shy of a 4 wheeler trail...it was still paved, but very narrow, just a few houses, and my first thought was the people that say that some follow their GPS right off a cliff.  As we prayed, I just kept watching the GPS count down the miles, as well as the computer gas gauge.  About 6 miles short of the gas station, the computer on the car read 0 miles left.  I started asking Doug about stopping at a house and just asking for a couple gallons of fuel.  We had some cash with us so we could pay them.  He just responded that God was going to get us there.  As we made our last right hand turn, I was having my doubts that the gas station was even going to be open!  On top of all this, Doug's parents were still behind us, with no cell service and had absolutely NO idea what was going on.  We pulled into the community store, where they had ONE gas pump with only 91 octane fuel.  At that point we didn't care.  God is good and he was so gracious to us to get us to that station.  I had my doubts, but seriously I'm frustrated that I did.  He was MORE than capable!  We made it home about 9:30pm, got unloaded, started laundry, and went straight to bed.
Back to the daily grind first thing in the morning...

Marissa's Birthday Celebration

I feel kind of guilty about Marissa's birthday this year.  With the upcoming funeral, packing, and such, I didn't feel like she had our full attention.  Thankfully she is sweet, understanding, and caring and didn't seem bothered by it one bit.  I did get her dinner request and desert made though.  This year she wanted Spanish Rice and blackberry pie.  We made it for lunch so that we wouldn't be rushed in the evening.  With Grandma and Grandpa already gone to Maine, we did our birthday celebration with just us and Uncle Kenny and Aunt Laurie.  It was nice to have them be able to come down.  After lunch, it was present time!

We got the girls a joint gift this year.  With the upcoming trip and being unsure of what time we would have, we decided to give it to them now.

They had no idea what it was LOL

We ended up having to explain it to them.  It was a Bocce Ball set.  We thought it would be nice to have a new outdoor game for camping season!

We love you Marissa!

I'm still here...

...I just about have everything put back together after our trip.  I just need work on pictures now and get things put together for the blog.  New post will be up tomorrow.  I'm sorry about the gap the last couple days.  My head hasn't been here.

Youth group for April...WHOOPS :)

I totally forgot these never got posted!  Better late than never right?  We actually had youth group twice the month of April.  There was a special meeting at Black River church, which I posted about, I just failed to post these pictures with it.  Here is a good picture of the group that was in attendance that night...

I love this one!  The first game was with these trucks...they had to pull them back, let them go, and have them land in the square in front of them.

I think only one team hit the square...once LOL

2nd game was to shoot one member of their team with a ball soaked in paint.

After the message, we headed back downstairs for a couple more games.  The first game was a contest for which team could eat the most hot dogs the fastest.  I was too concerned about our teens not puking since they had to get in my car to ride home!
The second game was for one member of each of the 3 teams.  They had to choose the member with the best iron stomach.  Those three members were sent to another room.  A concoction was made while they were gone.  I'm not even sure all that went into it.  I know there was fruit cocktail, olives, applesauce, habanero peppers, black beans...I can't even remember all the rest.  Basically it was whichever team member could drink the whole thing the fastest won.

It was blended and then they brought back out the three team members.  The stench that came out of those blenders when the covers were taken off was enough to make me want to puke!  This is my last picture...trust me, you didn't want to see the rest!  The guy in the striped shirt downed his in about 30 seconds...INSANE!  The guy in the middle started downing his and ended up hitting the trash can directly behind him.  The guy I was pretty proud of...he finished his in about 3 minutes, even after knowing his team lost.  Pretty impressive!
Youth group for tonight is cancelled due to the funeral, but we have another group even in Rome at the end of the month so that will be our youth group activity for the month!  I can't wait!

2015/2016 School year is finished!

The girls have worked very hard all year, through breaks and such, so that they could be finished with school before Marissa's birthday.  Pretty much unless Doug was off of work, we were doing school.  Well, they succeeded!  What a great year.  We definitely had a few rough days in there, but overall it was an awesome, successful year.  I can't believe that I have an upcoming 6th grader and 4th grader!  INSANE!

Marissa is 11?!?!?!

How was this not yesterday...my little 6lb 13oz baby girl.  It blows my mind how fast they grow up.  :(   I always pull a couple pictures from past photos for today each year, so if you want to see more, just go back in the blog archives and look at some past blogs.  For now...here are a few oldies, but goodies :)

Probably my favorite picture of her and her daddy...I love how she looks like she is hugging him.

Proud Grandma and Grandpa

The bond between these guys started quite a while ago.

I love this picture of my grandpa... <3

Madalyn said she wants to see these three back in this wagon next time they are up :)

Marissa's idol...

Ashton was good company while we were in the NICU

Marissa still has memories of these candy necklaces and Aunt Chelsea

...and we hit the age of hating cameras...

Too cute!

<3

I say this every year, but I'm so blessed to be her mom.  She is so kind, compassionate,  and thoughtful.  She tries hard and is extremely patient.  She loves to read and create things.  I can't wait to see what this year holds!

Uncle Steve...

Saturday morning we got a phone call from Doug's mom that neither of us ever expected.  Uncle Steve had been killed that morning by a tree.  Because of the faith that we shared, I know that he is happy, whole and enjoying time with his parents, aunt and uncle, and other family members and friends that have gone on before him.  My heart immediately went to Aunt Marcia and their son Jeff.  I hurt tremendously for them.  I just can't even imagine.  I don't really have words.  He will be missed for sure...  Please continue to pray for Aunt Marcia and Jeff.
They would greatly appreciate it!

Awesome

I thought singing with the teens a couple Friday's ago was amazing...I can't even imagine how it would  feel to stand in a room with all these Marines, praising God's name!
A good reminder that we are not alone and there are even "some of us" in the
United States Marine Corp!  ;)
(It gets a little repetitious towards the end, but I just ended it)
